Is Health Insurance For College Students Affordable?
Make sure that your health is taken care of in your back to school checklist. It is simple and affordable to enroll in health insurance for college students and there are several options available for college students to get coverage.
Ask Your College About Student Health Plans
If your school offers a student health plan, it can be an easy way to get basic health insurance to cover yourself from large insurance bills.
If you are/do enroll(ed) in a student healthcare plan, in most cases it counts as qualifying health coverage (like major medical health insurance).
Stay On Your Parents Plan If You Are Under 26
See if your parent’s health insurance plan covers dependents. If it does you can normally be added to their plan and remain on it until you are 26. Once you are 26 you must get onto your own health plan.
Get Your Own Marketplace Plan
You’ll be able to find plenty of plans and prices available to you at healthcare.gov. Based on your household size and income you may be able to qualify for extra savings. If someone will claim you as a dependent on next year’s taxes then you will not qualify for extra savings with an insurance plan.
If you have missed the Open Enrollment Period (OEP) which is Nov. 1st – Dec 15th, then see if you have experienced a Qualifying Life Event (QLE) to qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. If you do not qualify you will just need to wait for a QLE or the next OEP.
